An asymmetric face is when one side of your face looks different from the other. This condition may arise due to several factors such as injury or asymmetries in the skull present at birth.

To determine if your face is asymmetrical, you need to check for unevenness across your face. This is in areas like your eyebrows, cheekbones, eyes, and lips. If there’s an imbalance on either side of your mouth, then it could be a symptom of having an asymmetric face.

The good news is that you don’t have to live with this condition forever. More so, since there are treatments available!

What about adults? Can asymmetry occur later in life?

How to tell if you have an asymmetrical face

Well, how can you tell if you have an asymmetrical face or not?

You may watch out for the following indicators:

  1. Your eyes don’t line up with each other.
  2. One side of your face is bigger than the other, or one cheekbone is higher than the other.
  3. The space between your upper lip and nose looks larger on one side compared to the rest of your features.

So, how can you check if you have an asymmetrical face at home?

  • Stand in front of a mirror
  • Look at your face from both sides and take note if one side seems different than the other
  • Make sure you’re looking at yourself straight-on, not through tilted glasses or skewed lenses
  • Check to see which ear is higher up on your head compared with the other (it can be quite hard to notice)
  • If there’s any difference between them, then it may indicate an uneven facial appearance

Other ways you can do it:

  • Take out some photos of you looking sideways. You can use your phone’s camera for this.
  • Print the photos out and lay them down to make a close comparison.
  • If you have a family member who can take photos for you, then ask them to do so and compare the results.

Facial implants work best for people with a cheek or chin imbalance.

They’re usually done by cosmetic surgeons experienced in facial procedures.

People who get them may experience some side effects afterward. The most common include an infection or implant rejection.

2. Facial reshaping surgery

This type of procedure involves changing the bone structure to create a more even appearance on your face.

Most people who go for surgery may have had an accident that caused facial damage.

It’s also common for people to get it done if they have a severe case of uneven face shapes.

Facial reshaping can be quite risky because the results are unpredictable. This means no one will know what your new look will turn out like until you go through with it.

That said, before deciding on this procedure, ensure you ask plenty of questions prior. Ask about how much symmetry you’ll achieve and its side effects as well.

3. Orthodontic braces for teeth alignment

These mostly work to correct uneven dental work caused by bad dental care. It’s also used in case of accidents with sports gear like mouthguards and helmets when playing contact sports.

4. Facelift surgery

This option works by removing excess skin on the sagging area of your face. It gives better results when it comes to restoring the balance between features like your cheekbones and jawline.

While this might sound promising at first, you’ll have to keep in mind that there’s no guarantee it will work.

5. Fillers

This is a non-surgical procedure that works by restoring lost volume.

Fillers mostly work on the cheeks, jawline, or chin to bring back proportionality and balance in your face.

It’s also used for lip augmentation if you want a fuller pout.

The most popular options include Botox amongst other filler injections.

6. Rhinoplasty

This procedure is also commonly known as a nose job. It’s used to even out any defect or disproportion in your nose’s features.

The most common way to do this is by using implants. Other times, a surgeon may use other techniques like shaving down the bone structure at the bridge of your nose.

7. Makeup

This is one of the more affordable solutions available.

Even though not a permanent treatment option, it’s great for bringing evenness in your facial appearance at home.


Having an asymmetrical face is a normal thing that should not bother you much.

Most of the time, simple makeup can correct the imbalanced brow or cheek.
