How to Get Hair Dye Out of Carpet

Having guests at home may be a cause of getting your carpet dirty, especially when they are out of control. Having children at home may also cause accidental spillage of any kind on your carpet. Another cause is if you spill hair dye over it while dying your hair.

Carpet hair dye stains are hard to clean. A cloth washer will not be suitable, since its fabric and texture are heavier than that of regular cloth. Another reason is that hair dye is a concentrated colorant that won’t come off right away.

How To Clean Hair Dye From Carpet

Before you decide to use harsh chemicals, consider looking for ingredients at home. Household cleaning agents include dish soap, ammonia, hydrogen peroxide, rubbing alcohol, and vinegar.

Use any of the above and add water. Use the solution to remove the stains. The process may cause discolorations. Discolored areas may be restored by using a pen suitable for fabric.

Different Methods In Cleaning Hair Dye From Carpet

Vinegar, Rubbing Alcohol, and Detergent

  1. Gather all the ingredients and supplies needed.
  2. Use a large bowl. Fill it up with 2 cups of warm water. Add a tablespoon of white vinegar. Lastly, add a tablespoon of dish soap.
  3. Apply the mixture to the stain.
  4. Dip a clean cloth in the mixture. Remove excess liquid. Wring out the cloth.
  5. Press onto the stain without rubbing to avoid the spread of the hair dye.
  6. Dab on the area affected. The cleaning solution loosens up the stain.Use another dry cloth and blot the area.
  7. When the cloth is too soaked already, replace it with a dry one.
  8. Dab the stain. Use a damp sponge to pat the stain.
  9. Remove excess water from the carpet using a different dry cloth.
  10. If dye traces are still visible, put a few drops of your rubbing alcohol. Repeat the latter until the carpet is gone completely.


  1. Gather all the ingredients and supplies needed.
  2. Prepare a solution. Pour 2 cups of warm water in a basin
  3. Add a teaspoon of dish soap
  4. Lastly, add a tablespoon of ammonia. For ventilation, open the doors and windows.
  5. Apply by using a clean cloth dipped into the ammonia mixture. Dab the cloth on the hair dye stain. You should wear gloves while doing this. Ammonia is toxic. It can harm your skin.
  6. When you have covered the stained surface.
  7. Let it sit for half an hour. Kids and pets are not allowed near it.
  8. Dip a clean cloth in the mixture. You can also use a sponge.
  9. Dab the stained area with it.
  10. Wring the sponge.
  11. Put it on the carpet.
  12. Allow the area to sit for five minutes.
  13. Repeat the above step until the results are pleasing.
  14. Take a clean and dry cloth and dip it in water.
  15. Blot the area. Use a sponge. Get rid of excess liquid.
  16. Removed most of the moisture.
  17. Let it dry for a day. You can turn on a fan hasten drying.

Hydrogen Peroxide

  1. Gather all the ingredients and supplies needed.
  2. Apply the solution by putting in a few drops of the hydrogen peroxide using an eyedropper. Make sure you have covered the stained area completely.
  3. Allow drying a day.  Let the hydrogen peroxide break the stain.
  4. Remove the hydrogen peroxide by blotting the area. Use a wet sponge. Press onto the stain without rubbing to avoid the spread of the hair dye.
  5. Let it dry
  6. Find the fabric pen at a craft store. Look for a color that matches your carpet.
  7. The carpet may lose its color. Use the fabric pen to recolor it.

Hairspray And Astringent

  1. Gather all the ingredients and supplies needed.
  2. Apply the cleaning agent. Spray hairspray onto the stained area. Make sure you cover all the parts completely.
  3. Let it sit for 5 minutes before rinsing the stained part using cold water.
  4. Apply Astringent solution
  5. Leave it for five minutes.
  6. Use a sponge to pat the stain. Allow seeping in of the hairspray and astringent into the stained area.
  7. Rinse the area again with cold water and dry the carpet using a sponge or a towel.


  • Dealing with hair dye stains: Remove them as soon as possible.
  • Do not use dish soap. Use baby shampoo instead. It’s more fragrant. It also has the same effect.
  • If you cannot deal with it on your own, call a professional to do it.


  • Open the windows. Also the doors.
  • Ventilate the area.
  • Dry the carpet well before use to avoid the growth of molds.
  • Keep your children as far as possible. Don’t let your pets come near too.
  • Wear a mask to cover your mouth and gloves to protect your hand. Be cautious when working with ammonia and hydrogen peroxide.

How To Remove Fresh Hair Dyes

  1. Gather all the materials needed.
  2. With a clean towel or cloth, blot the dye as much as you can. Avoid rubbing the carpet while doing this step.
  3. Get two cups of lukewarm water and add one tablespoon of dish liquid and a tablespoon of white vinegar. The white vinegar is optional.
  4. Get a clean cloth and dip it in the solution you have prepared and dab the stain with it. Use a wet and dry cloth at intervals until you have removed the stain.
  5. Rinse the stained area using cold water.
  6. Soak up the liquid using a clean cloth or sponge.
  7. Get a different clean cloth and dip it in a tad bit of rubbing alcohol. Keep dabbing the spot until the stain is gone.
  8. For stubborn stain, mix two cups of warm water, a tablespoon of ammonia, and a teaspoon of dish liquid. Dab this solution to the area and wet the stain. Let it sit for 30 minutes.  Every five minutes, dab more of the solution with a new cloth. Take note not to use this on a wool carpet, it can damage its fibers.
  9. Rinse the stained area using cold water.
  10. When there are no longer any visible stains, soak up the remaining liquid with a cloth. Wait for the carpet to dry. Vacuum the carpet to revive its fibers.

How To Remove Old Hair Dye Stains

Dried hair dye stains are more difficult to remove than fresh ones. While the tips for fresh hair dye stains are good, the following are solutions preferred for old ones. To be safe, test these out on an out-of-the-way- area beforehand.


  1. Using Alberto V05 Hairspray
  • Buy an Alberto V05 Hairspray and spray it on the stain.
  • Wet the entire area with stain.
  • Allow the hairspray to sit on the stain for about 5 minutes.
  • Use cold water to rinse the area.
  • Remember, acetone is part of the hair spray composition. This can alter the color of the carpet. Make sure to test out the solution first.
  1. Using Sea Breeze Astringent
  • Apply Sea Breeze Astringent on the stained area. Make sure the entire area is wet and covered.
  • Let the astringent sit on the stain for 5 minutes.
  • Repeat this step until the stain is no more.
  • Take note that the astringent can bleach the carpet’s color, so make sure to test this out first.
  1. Using Johnson’s Baby Shampoo
  • Check the hair dye spilled. If you know for a fact that it is water-based then you might have the luck to get it off with Johnson’s baby shampoo.
  • First, apply water on the stain and dab shampoo on it.
  • Rub in the product with care.
  • Using cold water, rinse the carpet and repeat as needed.
