Ruddy Complexion: What it is and How to Deal with it

The word ruddy is used to describe a person having a red color complexion. So, a person with a healthy red glow on the skin is described as having a ruddy complexion. The adjective can be used negatively by so many people. It is said that someone has a ruddy complexion when one has patches of red color on the skin. It could be the face or any other place.

Your skin type, texture, and skin tone are very important factors when it comes to ruddiness-related problems. Sometimes the red patches may feel itchy, burning sensation, or irritating. Such can cause acne on your skin. It is therefore advised to consult a dermatologist.

Causes of Ruddy Complexion

What makes your face appear uneven, blotchy, or have visible broken capillaries? Several factors may cause your skin to appear reddish. A qualified dermatologist will help you identify the specific reason. However, there are some general factors that might lead to a ruddy complexion. Here they are.

1. Genetic Inheritance

Rosacea is an example of a skin condition that can be inherited. Research studies in the past have shown that people with rosacea have had relatives struggling with the same conditions. Irritation, constant red skin, bumps, and dry skins are signs that you should look out for.

Acnes can also be inherited among generations. The higher the number of people in your family with acne, the higher the risk for you to have such conditions. Signs to check for are blackheads, pimples, red bumps, and whiteheads.

There are people of certain nationalities who possess such skin concerns. Examples include; Scottish, English, Russian, Irish and German. If you have relatives of such descent, that may be the reason for the ruddy complexion.

2. Exposure to The Sun for a Long Time

People who work under the sun for long periods experience redness. Overexposure to the sun UV rays can affect the blood vessels’ appearance thus altering the skin color. The UV rays have high penetration and can change the DNA of your cells. This will result in genetic mutations in that your skin texture and color changes.

3. Alcohol

Yes, alcohol helps you relax and have a good time. However, it also alters the brain’s ability to control blood flow in the vessels thus more blood gets near the skin. This will only make your skin have more redness. The more the alcohol, the more the redness.

4. Stress

Stress is a destructive factor to both your behavior and the body. You experience skin disorders, chest pains, depression, headaches, and irritability when dealing with stress. Such are reasons you need to avoid stress.

WebMD researched how stress can accelerate the skin conditions like rosacea. Hives and rashes will also be triggered by stress. Alcohol has been shown to increase the risks of developing rosacea in women. People tend to consume a lot of alcohol when under stress, thus people may develop such skin problems.

5. Irritated Skin

Some people experience ruddiness on a temporal basis. This often happens when trying out new skincare routines. Maybe you are trying out a new product or trying to wash your face more frequently. All these can result in unwanted skin reactions.

Allergies to specific ingredients in a product can cause redness. Other causative factors include using a harsh scrub, using a poorly formulated product, or having sensitive skin. The condition could last for a few days or weeks. It is important you determine the cause to avoid permanent conditions.

How to Get Rid of Ruddy Complexion

You may not be able to get rid of Ruddy complexion completely. However, you can reduce its effects and prevent further damage to your skin. We will look at the most effective ways to control ruddy complexion.

1. Protect Your Skin from The Sun

Sun protection measures are a must if you know the adverse effects of the sun’s UV rays. The rays can cause sunburn or rather worsen your already red skin. To avoid all these, apply sunscreen 30 minutes before you expose yourself to the sun for a long time. Also, you will need to reapply every two hours.

Other ways to protect yourself include;

  • Limit exposure to the sun during peak hours (10 a.m. to 3 p.m.)
  • Wear UV resistant sunglasses
  • Wear broad-brimmed hat
  • Long sleeves and pants can be used to cover exposed areas
  • Seek shade when it is too hot

2. Using Antioxidants

Such should be part of daily routine.  An antioxidant serum is a good remedy to acne marks, redness, and freckles. The skin tone will eventually improve and have a nice glow.

How do they work? Antioxidants combine to neutralize radicals formed in the body. The radicals are the ones that damage the body’s proteins, lipids, or DNA. They donate a free electron to the radicals so that they become stable and harmless.

3. Frequent Moisturizing

Moisturizing is one of the easiest ways to avoid ruddy skin. The skin will stay hydrated by trapping the water. There will be no more skin irritation thus more comfortable. Try using moisturizers that contain Hyaluronic acid and Aloe Vera. Such components provide intense hydration that is required.

4. Use Aloe Vera

Aloe Vera is known to have a lot of benefits for our skin. Its anti-inflammatory and anti-bacterial properties will reduce blemishes, ruddy complexion, scars, and freckles on your skin. The soothing effect will also improve your skin tone. You can use aloe Vera gel or a fresh one from the farm; both work perfectly.

5. Avoid Over-Exfoliating Your Skin

Please be gentle on your skin. Do not exfoliate or scrub your skin roughly. Being aggressive can expose and accelerate the different skin problems. It is like scraping off the cover to your fresh wound. Cleanse the skin gently and a few times like once a week. For those with sensitive skin, use a gentle exfoliant.

6. Choose Your Skin Care Products Carefully

Redness can come as a result of skin irritation by skincare products. Be cautious that you do not use products that cause flare-ups on your face. Check on the ingredients if you are allergic to any of them. For further and better information consult your dermatologists.

Conclusion

Ruddy complexion is something you can control provided you follow the instructions carefully. I believe the assumptions that you had on ruddy complexion are now answered. Remember everyone’s skin is unique and they are treated differently. Your dermatologist should be the first person to consult as they give the best advice.
